Intersectionality in Sport: Building a Future Where Everyone Belongs
We’re proud to share that our Participation Manager, Avery Holderness-Roddam, has been selected for the Intersectionality Implementation Lead in Sport program – a national initiative led by the Australian Sports Commission to help shift systems and drive lasting, inclusive change across the sector.
The program will provide specialist training in intersectionality, inclusive governance, and systemic change, as well as tools to help bring the All-Inclusive Approach to Governance and Leadership in Australian Sport to life. Avery will also join a national community of practice committed to equity, representation, and cultural safety.
Avery explained the importance of intersectionality, and what participating in the program meant to him, “Intersectionality is about recognising how different systems of power – like racism, ableism, sexism, and transphobia – overlap and compound each other.
As a trans man living with disability, I know firsthand what it’s like to navigate sport from the margins. But I also know the power of community, and the potential for sport to uplift every one of us.
That’s why I’m deeply committed to ensuring our sport is a place where all people – across gender, race, ability, identity, or background – feel seen, valued, and safe. I welcome this opportunity to grow my skills and better champion inclusion across fencing.”
We look forward to supporting Avery as he brings this learning back to our sport and helps shape a more inclusive future for fencing in Australia.
