When and Why they started fencing:
Emily Samuels-Ballantyne is an accredited fencing coach with the Australian Fencing Federation (AFF) and holds a coaching qualification through the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). A former member of the Australian national fencing team, in french grip epee, she has represented the country in international competition and now brings her depth of experience to the coaching arena. Emily’s style draws from Eastern martial arts philosophy, combining focus, discipline, and a holistic approach to skill development.

Alongside her sporting background, Emily holds a PhD in Living Systems Theory, which explores the interconnectedness of body, heart, and mind across all levels of life. She believes in cultivating not only athletic excellence but also agency and awareness: the ability to act freely and responsibly in a complex, interconnected world.

Emily is also a certified Yoga Teacher with the International Yoga Alliance, specialising in Yin Yoga and the Chakra system. She integrates these modalities into her fencing sessions, creating a mindful and embodied learning environment. With an up-to-date Working with Vulnerable People Check (TAS) and certification in CPR and First Aid, Emily offers a safe, focused, and inspiring space for students to grow, physically, mentally, and ethically.
