Australian Fencing Federation Launches National Participation Strategy

A Shared Vision for Growing and Strengthening Fencing Across Australia

The Australian Fencing Federation (AFF) is proud to launch its new National Participation Strategy, setting a clear direction for growing fencing from 2026 to 2032.

The strategy represents a commitment to the entire Australian fencing community. From clubs and state associations to coaches, volunteers, parents, officials and participants, the strategy provides a framework for how we can work together to make fencing more accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for Australians of all ages and backgrounds.

AFF President Sam Auty said the launch marks an exciting step forward for the sport.

“This strategy is about all of us. It is a roadmap for the future of fencing in Australia, but more importantly it is an invitation for every part of our community to help shape that future.”

“We know that strong participation is the foundation of a strong sport. By creating more positive experiences and supporting people to join, stay involved and thrive in fencing, we are investing in the long-term success of our clubs, our states and our national community.”

The National Participation Strategy recognises that meaningful growth does not happen overnight.

“We are raising the bar for what participation in Australian fencing can look like, but we are not expecting clubs, coaches or volunteers to achieve that on their own,” the President said.

“The AFF’s role is to provide support and resources such as online learning opportunities, education resources, and participation programs that can be adapted to local environments.”

The AFF is encouraging all members of the fencing community to engage with the strategy, embrace new opportunities and make use of the resources that become available. The AFF also welcomes feedback from across the fencing community as initiatives are developed and opportunities for consultation arise.

“Some of the best ideas in our sport come from the people delivering fencing experiences every day. We want to listen, learn and continue improving. When opportunities for feedback and consultation are available, we encourage everyone to contribute.”

The launch of the National Participation Strategy signals a positive and ambitious future for Australian fencing. By working together the Australian fencing community is well placed to grow participation, strengthen clubs and inspire the next generation of fencers.
