Aussies set for action at World Uni Games in Germany
A record contingent of Australian fencers have headed to Essen, Germany to compete in the World University Games this week.
From 17 July – 22 July Fencing will be on the agenda, with 16 Australian athletes and two coaches heading over to represent our country and sport on the world stage.
It will be the opportunity to showcase some of our best talent on a global scale, with over 8,500 competitors from across 18 sports taking part in the event.
And to make it even more special, our own Arnav Raja was selected from all the Australian athletes attending, to be the flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
Speaking after learning about the honour, Raja said he couldn’t believe it.
“I never imagined I’d ever do anything like this in my life,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it when they told me – and for a fencer to get this honour over all the other sports and athletes competing here, it really is something very very special.”
“We have all settled in quite well and are really looking forward to getting the competition underway.”
