Glasson shines on another great day for Aussies in India
Joseph Glasson has again made it to the pointy end of a major senior fencing tournament, finishing in 11th place at the 2026 Senior Asian Fencing Championships in Delhi, India.
And Genevieve Gilarski went one better from her 48th place finished in 2025 – getting into the round of 32 in the Individual Women’s Epee event and placing 31st.
Glasson, who was the best Australian fencer on day three at the event breezed through his pool 5-0 to be the sixth ranked athlete in the DE’s.
He made light work of Kiwi Jacob Takuira-Mita 15-3 in the Table of 64 before taking on Indian Sachin Sachin in the Table of 32 where he comfortably progressed 15-10.
From there Glasson was pitted against Japan’s Kazuki Iimura – ranked 10th in the world coming into the tournament in the T16 bracket.
But frustration crept in with Glasson not happy with his weapons throughout the match with Iimura and he ended up going down 15-6.
Men’s Foil
In the Men’s Foil Event all four of our fencers made it through the pools with Hugo Bosnic, Aron Thian and Samuel Mooney Grand all joining Glasson and progressing through to the Table of 64.
Unfortunately for the trio that was as far as they would progress in the tournament with Bosnic going down 15-10 to Korean Cheolwoo Im, and Mooney Grand no match for Hong Kong’s Ka Long Cheung (15-2).
Thian was the next closes athlete to progress to the T32, pushing his opponent Tristan Xing Han Cheng of Malaysia all the way but just unable to finish the job on the wrong end of a 15-14 scoreline.
Women’s Epee
All four of our women’s epeeists made it through the pools and into the DE’s with Imogen Rice, Amelee Yee, Ashley Mae Harrison and Gilarksi repping the green and gold.
Harrison came agonisingly close to progressing to the Table of 32 with a heartbreaking loss 15-14 to Malaysian Bee Hooi Goh.
Rice did well but was overpowered by Hong Kong’s Haidi Wu (15-8), while Yee battled hard before being outdone by Singaporean Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman, 15-11.
Gilarski went 3-3 in her pool before taking down Vietnemese fencer Thi Thuy Trinh Tran 15-13 to progress to the next round.
In the T32 she was up against China’s Jingwen Yang who was simply too good – going down 15-3 and claiming 31st spot overall in the process.
Gilarski said she was very happy with her day recording her best ever senior fencing result.
“I was going into the comp today quite apprehensive as I was dealing with an injury,” she admitted.
“I took it one bout at a time, focusing on working with what I could physically do.
“I’m very happy to walk away with three wins in poules and a DE win to secure a top 32 finish – my personal best in Seniors.
“All the Aussie girls fenced really well, with everyone making it past the poules and we are all really keen for teams!”
